BACKGROUND:
Shabelle Community Development Organization (SHACDO) is a local nongovernmental humanitarian and development organization which is headquartered in Afgoye District but has sub project office in Mogadishu-Somalia. SHACDO is mandated in responding the community’s needs and targeting to the potential gaps of the poor communities. SHACDO prioritizes to identify the most appropriate targets for their projects where the poorest communities are suffering most. Pursuant to this mission SHACDO in partner with CONCERN World Wide is planning to implement Nutrition and Health intervention in Lower Shabelle Region. As part of this plan and subject to receipt of the fund SHACDO is looking a qualified Nurse/Nutrition that will be based in Lower Shabelle region.
General Description of the Role:
The Nurse/Nutritionist is responsible for assessing, admitting, treating and following up the individual children and women assisted in assigned centre(s) within SHACDO's nutrition programme in Lower Shabelle and the communities that are served by those centers. The Nurse/Nutritionist will oversee and support the activities of at least one Community Nutrition Team, including IYCF counseling, defaulter tracing, home visits, SC follow ups etc, and collect weekly and monthly reports and tally sheets. S/he will be responsible for keeping account of all the medicines, food, RUTF, RUSF and other supplies in the centre and keeping up to date records, requesting more when needed, ahead of time. The Nurse/Nutritionist is responsible for thoroughly and carefully assessing the children and women presenting at the centre, completing OTP/SFP cards fully and accurately, and clearly recording all information relevant to that person on the cards. S/he will also refer families to IYCF counselors or support groups when needed, and refer children to SC or hospital immediately when required. The N/N will participate in any exercises organized to collect data at household, community/campaign district level, and work closely with others in the team at all times. This position will be based in Afgoye or Wanle-weyn district in lower Shabelle region with potential visits to other programme locations in the region should they become accessible.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Programme implementation and Development
- Manage and run one nutrition centre as per agreed protocol
- Become familiar with and adhere to all admission, home visit, referral and discharge protocols for OTP and SFP.
- Carefully and thoroughly assess each child at check-ups, and record all information clearly and accurately on the OTP/SFP card.
- Administer drugs and provide therapeutic/supplementary food to severely and moderately malnourished children and women in line with agreed protocols, and keep records of all supplies used.
- Immediately refer any severely malnourished child with complications to hospital/SC and fill out the referral forms correctly. Either accompany the child to hospital personally, or ensure that another staff or CNT member accompanies them.
- Refer absent, defaulting or non-responding children to the CNTs for follow up (home visit) and record details of the home visit and outcomes on the OTP card.
- Support the Community Health Workers Team(s) in allocated centers with all outreach, follow-up, IYCF counseling and data collection responsibilities.
- Carry out CMAM, IYCF and other training for CNTs, and participate in recruitment of new CNTs if/as necessary.
- With support from the Nutrition Officer(s), carry out IYCF counseling through one-to-one and support group sessions, and support CNTs to do the same.
- Alert the Nutrition Officer to any increase in incidence of communicable diseases such as measles, polio, AWD/cholera or others either in the centre or in the communities.
- Participate in any campaigns such as de-worming, hygiene promotion, etc as required.
- Produce and agree weekly, monthly and quarterly work plans with the Nutrition Officer and Nutrition Field Officer.
- Participate in team meetings and other meetings/trainings as requested.
- Carry out other activities as agreed with the Nutrition Officer and SHACDO management staff.
Monitoring and Reporting
- Compile and submit weekly and monthly tally sheets (admission/discharge numbers, stock usage, defaulter tracing, disease surveillance, case finding, IYCF counseling, and others) to the Nutrition Officer in the required formats and in a timely manner.
- Keep and submit stock records for food, medicines and other supplies.
- Participate in nutrition assessments, surveys, surveillance, program reviews and other monitoring activities as required.
- Contribute to the preparation and collection of case studies to demonstrate programme impact, if requested.
- Undertake regular visits to the communities to support & work with CNTs, monitor very sick children who refuse transfer to hospital, and report back with findings/recommendations
Other
- Work closely with the Education, WASH and other teams as needed to expand the reach of the programme.
- Other tasks as may reasonably be requested by the Nutrition Officer.
Skills and qualifications
Education
- Qualified Nurse or Public Health Nutritionist.
- Additional training on treatment of severe acute malnutrition, health/hygiene promotion, IYCF and/or communicable disease management is desirable.
- Qualified local applicants will be given priority.
Experience and Skills
- Essential
- At least three years experience of health & nutrition-related humanitarian/development programme implementation
- Experience of implementing emergency nutrition approaches including CMAM, and familiarity with protocols
- Knowledge of and/or interest in IYCF/behavior change/education interventions and counseling
- Experience of working in complex, insecure environments
- Fluent spoken and written Somali
- High level of spoken and written English
